Learn about the best hair loss treatments for men and women. Dr. Markou discusses the different hair restoration options available today.

Today we’d like to discuss legitimate treatments in hair restoration. With the new era of innovative technology, there are multiple solutions available for those suffering from thinning hair and genetic scalp conditions.

Hair Loss Treatment Options Include:
1. Rogaine
2. Propecia
3. Low-Level Laser Hair Therapy
4. Platelet-Rich Plasma Hair Treatment
5. Hair Transplants – Linear Strip Method or Follicular Unit Extraction

Rogaine (Minoxidil) – an over the counter topical solution for hair loss. Rogaine works by stimulating the circulation on the scalp and widening hair follicles. This allows blood, oxygen, and nutrients to have a better flow to the hair follicle. When used alone, I don’t find that it is that helpful. However, some patients do say it can considerably help.

Propecia (Finasteride) – an oral hair loss medication for men taken by mouth. Propecia is one of the most common medications used for the treatment of hair loss in men, and is very effective in helping you stop lose hair. However, it takes about 6 months to stop hair loss and could take up to a year to see some hair regrowth in the crown. When used with Rogaine, both hair loss treatments seem to work even better.

Low Level Laser Hair Therapy – non-surgical hair loss treatment for men and women. Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) uses infrared (low-level) lasers to thicken existing hair follicles, regrow hairs, and stop hair loss. These lasers also work great with wound healing and hair transplant surgery. LLLT for hair loss is a simple and easy procedure that can be done in the comfort of your own home 3 times a week. You can buy it in a comb, a hat, or even a helmet. Laser Hair Restoration is pretty effective, especially when used with Rogaine and Propecia.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Hair Treatment – non-surgical, regenerative treatment for men and women suffering from hair loss. PRP Hair Restoration uses the patient’s own blood plasma to heal damaged hair follicles, prevent further hair loss, and stimulate hair regrowth. The procedure involves a simple blood draw in our Tampa office, we spin the blood product down to concentrate the platelet layer. Platelets release growth factors that contain circulating stem cells – the cells that help you repair and rebuild damaged hair follicles and tissues.

Hair Transplants – surgical hair loss treatment that transplants healthy hair from one area of the scalp to the area affected by thinning hair or pattern baldness. There are currently three hair transplants available today:

1. ARTAS Hair Transplant – the first and only Robotic Hair Transplant System used in the field of hair restoration. The System uses precision robotics, advanced digital imaging, and intelligent algorithms to perform the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Hair Transplant method.

2. NeoGraft Hair Transplant – automated handheld hair transplant device that helps the surgeon extract and transplant hair follicles at a faster and more accurate rate compared to the manual FUE hair transplant method.
