Stacey Broughton’s salon basic tutorial is a short square layer. This technique teaches you how to place a square layered shape on a round head utilising corner placement and how the defining of those corners affects suitability.
Stacey begins by dividing the head into three panels reflective of where the head curves.

He first works with the nape panel guiding you through the square placement with consideration of the head shape and natural hairline. By using over-direction a first shape is achieved to use as a guide working up the head to the horse-shoe section. Stacey then takes a vertical section over the top of the ear pulls the hair out at 90 degrees and cuts a square line, continuing this square shape by over-directing against the round of the head throughout both side areas. The top area is connected in square, with the fringe area over-directed to continue the square theme, then refining the corners depending on hair texture and quality.

This foundation technique teaches the student how to master over-direction and the comprehension of head shape. The resulting corner placements offer a unique tailoring opportunity to achieve a head hugging short shape with defining lines and detail for a bespoke trend-led finish.
